The Samuel Phoenix Chapter was organized April 18, 1936 with a beginning membership of 28 ladies. It was chartered with the name "John Melchert Vanderpool Chapter". John Vanderpool was the ancestor of the organizing regent, Mrs. George Elithorp.

The chapter voted unanimously to change their lengthy name, and petitioned the National Board of Management, NSDAR for a name change, to the Samuel Phoenix Chapter. Samuel Phoenix was Delevan's first settler. This name change was granted at the National Board of Management Meeting of October 9, 1970. John Melchert Vanderpool Chapter became Samuel Phoenix Chapter.
