May 20, 1941 by Mrs. Ida Roe Whitnall. Fort Atkinson - Eli Pierce Chapter
Fort Atkinson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was founded February 22nd 1899, in the home of Mrs. Lucien B. Caswell. The name of the chapter was selected, as was the city's name, after the Army General who built a fort here during the early 1830s during the time of the Blackhawk War. From the fort, Atkinson established his headquarters and plotted his campaign to hunt down the wiley Blackhawk Indians during he war which immortalized the greatest of the Sac chiefs, Black Hawk. The early history of the chapter reads like a play of the interest revived in Revolutionary history and our own local history. The ladies were duty-bound to mark the historical points around the city, and it was through their generosity and hard work that the site of the original fort and stockade were marked in 1907, when the chapter was only eight years old. Somewhat before the site of the old stockade and fort were finally marked by the handsome boulder and bronze plaque, the ladies had taken a great interest in the intaglio mounds which were to be found in the city about a mile and a half from the center of the city and which are considered rare. They first leased the land upon which the best remaining specimen was located, and when it appeared this intaglio panther would soon slip away to oblivion and the plow, they made concerted and feverish plans to purchase the land, mark the site properly and by June 5, 1920, with a great pageant and dedication this historic site of ancient tribes was preserved for all to enjoy and study.
