The Jean Nicolet Chapter was founded in May 1906
under the leadership of Mrs. Jeremiah S. (Francis Lawton) Dunham. The charter members chose the name of explorer Jean Nicolet as
the historical icon for the newly formed Wisconsin chapter.
Jean Nicolet was the first explorer to visit Wisconsin in 1634. Sent by
Governor Samuel de Champlain of New France, he entered Green Bay, and followed
the Fox River to Lake Winnebago.
