The Jean Nicolet Chapter's Patriot Ancestors

Presented on these pages are names of the patriots who served in the military or provided civic service during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783), identified by members of Jean Nicolet Chapter. When one considers the fact that less than one percent of the population in 1775 volunteered to defend the American Colonies against the tyranny of King George of England, Daughters of the Jean Nicolet Chapter can be proud of the service given to their country by their ancestors. About thirty of these patriots took up arms to defend Concord, Lexington, Bunker Hill, Cambridge, and Dorchester Heights, forcing the British to evacuate the City of Boston; six of our brave soldiers crossed the Delaware with George Washington that cold December night and many of those same soldiers continued fighting with him at the Battles of Trenton and Princeton. A dozen or so were taken prisoners – three of whom were placed on the ship, Jersey, in the New York harbor. One escaped, some were eventually exchanged and set free, but some died in prison; four were with General Washington when Lord Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown in October 1781. Many were immigrants, yet volunteered to fight in the American war – a total of twenty-four from the following countries: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Germany, and Switzerland. The patriots’ service records were found on our membership applications.
