Our Chapter History

In 1985, thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Ivan Niedling, six lineage workshops were held in the Marinette, WI/ Menominee, MI area to assist women interested in forming a DAR Chapter. The chapter was granted approval to become the "Queen Marinette" chapter, named after a woman who played a major part in the history of the area, and the chapter was organized under that name. The name was changed soon after organization to Menominee River. The river is not only important to our area now, but also historically as a locale for early French missionaries, fur trappers, Indian traders and the logging industry. The Menominee River is the largest river in Upper Michigan and provides most of the border between the Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin. The name Menominee comes from the Menominee (Algonquin) Indian name for the wild rice which grew abundantly in the river.
