The Oconomowoc Chapter NSDAR was organized on October 1969 at the home of Ann Hathaway Todd (Mrs. Wesley), with eight of the fourteen Charter Members present.
We took our name from our local area, most of us being from the Oconomowoc area. There are two versions for the meaning of the name Oconomowoc. One says it is an Indian name meaning "the place of the beaver." This is the literal translation of the word as given by the Indians themselves. The earliest settler to this area said, that when he first came here, he became very well acquainted with John Dority, a man belonging to the Chief Whirling Thunder band of the Winnebago. John Dority claimed that the name Oconomowoc meant "the River of Lakes," and when one observes the manner in which the lakes in this vicinity are united by the Oconomowoc River, that version seems quite reasonable. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
