"The Early Day."

Wau Bun Chapter members have continued interest in and aid to the operation of the Fort Winnebago Surgeons Quarters historic site.

Mrs. T. H. Sanderson had long wished to preserve one of the district school buildings that were being abandoned as the victims of school consolidation. In 1960 the Garrison School,  a school of the early settlers dating back to 1850, became available. Knowing that the Wisconsin Society was heavily involved in mortgage payments on the Curator's Cottage, Mr. and Mrs. Sanderson and Mr. and Mrs. Tennant, established a personal fund for the Garrison School. With the consent of the Wisconsin Society they moved it to the Surgeons Quarters grounds. Mr. and Mrs. Frank L. Harris of Racine, Mrs. Carl J. Kohler of Sheboygan Chapter and Mrs. Henry S. Jones of Marshfield Chapter also contributed to the fund. Benjamin Tallmadge Chapter of Milwaukee, led by sculptress Mrs. Mortimer Allen, made a significant contribution in the shape of appropriately dressed mannequins. It was a three year job to get the school ready, but in 1963 it was opened to the public. However, other repairs and acquisition of more equipment were considered essential, as the donors wished to present it to the State Society in perfect condition and free of debt. Its presentation and dedication were events of Flag Day, 1966.
