Our Early BeginningsA major project of the chapter was the acquisition of the ruins on the Old Military Post at Prairie du Chien. There was one wall standing and rough outlines of the other walls of the hospital. At a meeting of the chapter members on December 13, 1921, there was a discussion of the possibility of the land, on which the ruins were situated, to be divided into building lots. A committee was appointed and the land was purchased for $1,250. A down payment of $500 was made. By hard work, soliciting money from members and people of Prairie du Chien, giving parties, selling tickets to movies, selling soap, flour, vanilla and other articles, the remaining $750 was raised and on April 25, 1925, Fort Crawford Chapter became the proud owners of the ruins. In 1933 restoration was begun with the help of the City of Prairie du Chien, Federal funds were secured for the work. In 1934 the W.P.A. was ended leaving the restoration incomplete. By 1943, through the efforts of interested people, the building was completed. The restoration left the chapter burdened with a large debt for lumber. In the meantime the State Medical Society had become interested in the building and in the 1950s the chapter gave a quit-claim deed to it for the establishment of a museum and it became known as the Museum of Medical Progress and Stovall Hall of Health under the Charitable, Educational and Scientific Foundation of the State Medical Society.
