The name Nokomis was selected for this chapter because the members realized our state is a comparatively new one in the Union, and its only Revolutionary claim was the original settlers to this area. Thus, finding a Patriot of the Revolution to name the chapter for was remote.

The Indians used the name Nokomis the fictional figure who represents motherhood.  Her life story parallels the work of DAR members, in that they both instill patriotism, respect for ancestors, and receptiveness to moral teaching.
