The name Wausau was chosen for the chapter.  The present site of the City of Wausau was a gathering place for the Indians and was known as "Big Bull  Flats." The name Wausau, meaning "far away," in the Chippewa language,  was given the white settlement when it became a village in 1852.

The chapter was organized January 29, 1926.  Twelve ladies met at the Wausau Club for the organization meeting.
