Annis Avery Hill, for whom the chapter is named, was the seventh child and oldest daughter of Jonathan Avery and Pamelia Fox of Enfield, Connecticut. Jonathan gave service as a Private in James Clapman's Minute Man Company in 1775 and as Orderly Sergeant in the 10th Continental Infantry in 1776. He served during the defeats in the Long Island campaign early in the war.

Annis was born in Enfield, Connecticut April 13, 1796. At the age of 19 she married Caleb Hill and moved to West Springfield, Massachusetts. They had eight children. The seventh child and youngest daughter died young. The fourth child and eldest daughter married and moved to Wauwatosa in 1835. When Annis was widowed in 1842 at age 46, she and her six sons came to Wauwatosa in a covered wagon, arriving July 3, 1844.

Annis Avery Hill died in 1885 and is buried in the Wauwatosa Cemetery. She had been an active and beloved citizen of the community.
